Thirty-four Campion students split into two backpacking groups to experience over 15 miles of hiking at State Forest State Park and Indian Peaks Wilderness last weekend. Both groups hiked in about three or four miles on Friday evening and set up camp. Then on Sabbath, they spent the day climbing to reach alpine lakes. After camping again on Saturday night, they hiked back on Sunday. Despite challenges such as high altitude, cold nights and heavy bags, many students mentioned how the group was united, making the trip more enjoyable. Luca Lu, senior in the State Forest group, reflected, “I’ve done backpacking with Campion for the past three years and something different that I really enjoyed was the group we had this year that made the hike way more fun and relaxing.” Even though bad weather threatened in both areas, the groups were blessed with mostly sunny days and cool nights. Abigail Brown, a junior in the Indian Peaks group, said, “The weather was good, a little chilly and foggy, making us able to hike for longer and see lakes that we wouldn't be able to see if the weather was bad.” For several students, this was their first time backpacking, making this experience more unforgettable. Gabriel Tostes, sophomore, commented, “I had never done backpacking before and although it was tiring to walk with the weight of the backpack it was very satisfying to arrive at Kelly Lake. I also really enjoyed the time I spent together with my friends in the tent.” Bruno Lopes, Student News Team State Forest State Park Trip to Kelly LakeIndian Peaks Wilderness Trip to Lake Gibralter and Coney Lake

Freshman classSophomore classJunior classSenior classSA PicnicAll four classes came together to show their class spirit and compete in the annual Class Scramble and Student Association Picnic last weekend, starting the school year off on a fun note.
On Saturday night, the class of 26’ conquered Class Scramble yet again, winning by landslide, with a little over 300 points. Alexa Pinotoan shared what she thought made the team successful; “coming together in prayer and a determination to win as one team. We were motivated and fought hard.” The sophomores ended up in second place rallying one another when they were in last place during the first quarter. Kylee Hart stated, “When we first started the game, we were not ready for all the energy and determination brought that night by each class. However, as the game progressed, we pulled through and united as a team with a new determination to win.” On Sunday, students once again divided up into their class groups for SA Picnic to compete in more class activities such as the bus push, tug of war, and other fun games. Junior Amani Zeru expressed, “I enjoyed the bus push this year. Our class came together with a mind-set to win and we strategized a way to push the bus up the hill without completely burning ourselves out.” After the games were finished, the Student Association officers provided snacks for everyone while they cooled off on the slip-n-slide and relaxed with friends on center campus. Abigail Brown, Student Editor The Campion staff and students dedicated themselves and the new school year to God during the first Sabbath of the year.
On Friday, they kicked off the Sabbath by having a vesper deluxe, which means that after the regular vespers service students gather to sing and worship in the tower. A new senior, Kelly Borne stated, “As my first time at vespers deluxe, I felt the presence of God. I loved singing in the tower with everyone. It will probably be my favorite memory this year.” A new junior student from Japan, Mao Tsumagari, commented, “It was exciting getting to dress up and seeing everyone dress up too. I enjoyed singing songs with the other students.” On Sabbath at the Campion Church, we introduced our new staff and Koinonia shared our theme song of the school year, Turn Your Eyes upon Jesus. Then church members, HMS families, and Campion students joined together for potluck on campus. “The food was amazing and being able to talk to members of the church was fun,” Sergio Enriques, a senior, summarized. Pam Lah, Student News Team Students and staff brought their energy and enthusiasm to the annual Handshake event as they ushered in the new school year on Sunday.
Hyping up the crowd and dressed as super heroes, the Student Association (SA) officers led the event by introducing the theme for the school year: Look Up. After singing some classic camp songs, Spiritual Vice-President Shane Hart shared a worship thought on what it means to look to Jesus through whatever challenges one faces in life. The event was moved inside due to thunderstorms, but the rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the staff and students. Julia Paez, returning sophomore, commented, “I enjoyed how SA introduced themselves and the worship we had together. Seeing all the new students got me excited for the school year.” Classmates connected over friendly competitions before finally getting in line to greet each member of the Campion family. With many new faces, the staff and students took their time to introduce themselves to each other in the traditional handshake line. A new freshman, Donna Ortiz, recalled her experience greeting each person. “It made me a little bit excited, but I was also kind of scared to meet all the people that I would start to see every day. But, I looked around, and I saw a bunch of nice faces and thought, ‘I’d like to become friends with them,’ and I did!” For seniors, Handshake marks the beginning of their last year of high school. Marc Winokan, a four-year senior, mentioned that seeing all the new freshmen and other students made him reflect. “I was once in their position, and now I’m the one that’s gonna be there for them and lead them, which is pretty cool,” he stated. Campion is starting the school year with 118 students, with a predicted decrease in enrollment after graduating a class of 50. However, community interest continues to grow, and Campion expects to continue to gain more students throughout the school year. Campion has maintained its positive reputation internationally, and this year welcomes 28 international students from Brazil, China, Japan, Mexico, and Germany. Additionally, the number of community or village students has increased to 43, a number that is likely the largest percentage of village students in Campion’s history. Our Campion friends and local church members are welcome to come out to meet with our new student body and staff this Saturday afternoon for a potluck lunch on center campus. |
