Acquainting Agriculture

Campion Academy is proud to announce our new agriculture program called Acquainting Agriculture. The mission of our program is to acquaint our students with their Creator through direct contact with His handiwork. As students begin to see the incredible design, purpose and beauty of each plant, spoken into existence so long ago, we believe hearts will be revived in response to this evidence of His exhaustless love.
"The green fields, the lofty trees, the buds and flowers... all invite our attention and meditation, and bid us
become acquainted with God, Who made them all."
 - Ellen G. White 3T p.333

Our PROGRAM embraces every aspect of learning through the cultivation and care or our vegetables, fruits, and flowers.

  • Spiritually - connecting the natural experience with heavenly realities.
  • Physically - developing physical stamina to keep up with the daily requirements of agriculture.
  • Emotionally - building characters of perseverance, patience, faith, obedience, and gratitude.
  • Intellectually- teaching the life-long skill of soil preparation, sowing, cultivating, harvesting, and marketing; as well as the unique physiology of plants.
  • Socially -  working side by side with fellow students in the garden as they develop a missionary mind to teach and bless others in the community.

What makes the DIFFERENCE?

  • Our soils are tested and totally balanced with the missing minerals, allowing for the plants to reach their full genetic potential and provide nutrient dense produce.
  • We use minimal till methods which allow for improved microbe function in our soils, thus enhancing the bioavailability of the minerals to the plant.
  • We remain free from pesticide-use on any of our produce in order to maintain organic principles.
  • We also are committed to only use non-GMO, heirloom seeds, thus producing healthy foods for our consumption and continuing the legacy of handed-down seeds.

The BLESSINGS of farm work on the student and school campus is multi-faceted. We believe as students participate in this program:

  • Minds wil be strengthen as evidenced by an increase in GPA.
  • Campus morality will increase as students cultivate thoughts upon spiritual things.
  • Students will enhance their characters and develop better problem solving skills.
  • Individual health will increase as students are more apt to eat fresh produce if they are growing it personally.
  • Our school's influence and recognition in the community will increase as we provide locally grown produce of integrity.

Why WINTER GARDENING?

Since our school year calendar is during  Fall/Winter/Spring, we will be using Elliot Coleman's tried and true methods for winter gardening. The benefits of this method are:

  • No electricity for heating and therefore minimal utility costs
  • Growing intensively and in succession to produce food year-round
  • Using cold-hardy crops that can withstand the winter, are tasty, and full of minerals
  • Creating a unique marketing niche by supplying fresh produce in the middle of winter
  • Using low cost materials for covering the crops that anyone can afford
  • Relying on hand tools that are energy efficient and cost effective

WORKING in the CLASSROOM!
  • Each student will  have their own plot of land to work from seed to harvest as they learn all the skills necessary to grow a market garden.
  • Our classroom is held right on the farm with 80% of our class time being hands on.
  • Students are able to choose which winter-hardy crop they'd like to grow as part of a joint effort amongst all the students to meet the various needs of our customers.
  • As part of the student's final project, a portion of what is harvested will supply the school cafeteria with its fresh produce and the rest will then be sold at a local farmer's market, roadside stand, and/or restaurant. The profit is then distributed back to the student and the farm, allowing the student's hard work to be rewarded financially.
  • Students will also use their knowledge and skill in agriculture to educate the community by facilitating tours of the farm and conducting presentations at local venues.
