2026 Alumni Weekend - September 18-19
Featured Speaker: Gary Gryte, Class of 1966
Gary Gryte was born in Los Angeles, California, and raised in Boulder Colorado. He graduated from Campion Academy in 1966 before continuing his education at Southern Adventist University. It was there, in 1969, that he met Ladonna White, who would become his lifelong partner. Within days of beginning their life together, the couple stepped into ministry, serving a four-church district in southern Maryland. Gary later earned his Master of Divinity from Andrews University Theological Seminary in 1973.
Over the course of a 45-year career in ministry, Gary served in a variety of roles, including 22 years as a youth pastor, 8 years as an academy Bible teacher, and 15 years as a senior pastor. Following his retirement in 2014, Gary and Ladonna settled in Paradise, California. In 2018, their lives were upended when the devastating Camp Fire destroyed their home and all of their belongings. In the wake of that loss, they found a new opportunity to serve by volunteering at Monterey Bay Academy. Over the past several years, Gary has dedicated countless hours to supporting the campus community. He assists with grounds maintenance, helping preserve the beauty of the property, and steps in as a dormitory dean when needed. Affectionately known as "Papa Gryte," he also contributes as a coach for boys' athletic teams. Through his mentorship, he invests in students not only as athletes, but as young men-offering guidance, encouragement, and a steady example of faith in action.
Throughout every season of his life, Gary has embodied a quiet, steadfast commitment to serving others. Whether from the pulpit, in the classroom, or through simple acts of care and presence, his life reflects a consistent desire to point people toward hope and faith. His legacy is not only found in the roles he has held, but in the countless lives he has touched-communicating, in both word and action, the enduring love of Jesus to all he encounters.
